About

The Great Adventure Lab (formerly Adventures with Robots) is an after-school science enrichment program that runs in 50+ schools in the D.C. area. We’ve taught thousands of kids, how to write their first robotics programs or video game programs (or both!). We also teach science, engineering, electronics ... and more! We do it all with SMALL class sizes (adult-student ratio = 6:1). Our goal is to make science, technology, engineering and mathematics irresistibly FUN for the next generation.

You can read all about our classes and birthday parties at http://thegreatadventurelab.com. The site includes plenty of photos and links to videos from our classes!

We are an LLC based in Silver Spring, Md. We are fully insured and our instructors have passed background checks including FBI and state fingerprinting.

LEGO ROBOTICS

The GrAd Lab provides one computer and one robotics kits for each pair of students, for use during class.

GRADES 2-4   Wednesdays 3:15-4:15p

Oct 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, Nov 6, 13, 20 (Snow Day Dec 4)

Lego Robotics 1

Students may not repeat this class. Students must be in specified grade range.

Areas of exploration: robotics, programming, logic.  1 instructor, 1 aide. Eight 60-min meetings, once per week , $130. Min 11/ max 12 students.

This is our core class, where beginners learn to build and program LEGO® robots using LEGO® Education's award-winning WeDo robotics and programming software. Students follow step-by-step onscreen instructions to build their robots and a suggested program. Students who are ready develop more complicated programs involving motion or tilt sensors. In the final class, we take off the training wheels and challenge students to design and build and program bots that can achieve a certain task.

ENGINEERING

GRADES K-1   Thursdays 3:15-4:15p

Grades K-1. Areas of exploration: problem solving, engineering, logic. 1 instructor, 1 aide, Eight 60 min meetings, once per week, $125, min 11/ max 12 students.

Using LEGO® DUPLO Tech Machines Education kit designed for ages 5+, we’ll start each class with brief story-based challenge - and then use tools to build our own vehicular solutions. We'll  also extend each lesson with real-life applications of the concepts we cover while building! Wait til your kids start making toy-sized zip-lines for their creations all over your house!

GRADES 3-5  Thursdays 3:15-4:15p

Oct 3, 10, 17, 24, 31, Nov 7, 14, 21 (Snow Day Dec 5)

YOUNG ENGINEERS

Areas of exploration: engineering, physics., 2 instructors, Eight meetings, 60 minutes once a week, $135 plus $25 materials fee per student. Min 11/ Max 12 students.

Lots of people follow recipes for 30 years and still can’t cook. We don’t want that to happen to your budding engineers. In this class, kids will learn basic engineering concepts, while designing and building cool things like bridges, egg drops and … working catapults that are almost as large as your child!

Class will meet indoors but we’ll periodically venture forth outside to test out what we build. Each kid takes home his/her own catapult.
